Use the sources from the Book and these specific authors:
“The Opium of the Masses,” Marx pages 263-264
“The Future of an Illusion,” Freud pages 273-276
“The Experiential Basis of Theism,” Alston 125-131
How to write the example five parapraph essay:
Paragraph One: Intro to topic and thesis (Example: How can God and suffering coexist?)
o Explain theodicy and its problems for believers and non-believers o Explain Epicurus’s old question (Hume, 212)
o State the three authors I will use to address Hume and thus, demonstrate that God and suffering can co-exist. (This is my thesis statement. It should be the last sentence in the paragraph.) For example, “This essay will explore the work of Plantinga, Kaufman, and Wolterstorff to demonstrate how God and evil can co-exist and thus disprove Epicurus’s old question.”
• Paragraph Two: First paragraph of poof for my thesis statement
o Sentence one needs to be a transition between your intro and what this paragraph is about. It usually contains a claim or what your paragraph will focus on. (Because of how my thesis statement is written, this paragraph should address Plantinga as explained by Tidman.) Do not use a quote as your first sentence. Quotes are used to support your claims, not to make a claim.
o The next few sentences should use quotes and explanations of these quotes to lay out how this author supports your thesis. Note: cite every time you quote your author’s words or ideas. Example (Plantinga, 213).
o The last sentence or two should summarize the argument made in the paragraph and how it supports your thesis. No quotes in this sentence.
• Paragraphs Three and Four (Five): repeat the formula seen in one.
• Paragraph Five (Six): Conclusion.
This paragraph brings everything together to say, “look at me, I just proved my thesis.” This is a summary of your paper and where you demonstrate you have proved your thesis.
The first sentence still needs to have a transition and a claim. However, your claim is that you have demonstrated that God and suffering can co-exist by looking at Plantinga, Kaufman, and Wolterstorff. Summarize your points and point out how they support your thesis.
No quotes in this paragraph!
