you will choose a topic from Unit 3 and explain it to someone who does not have a background in physics.
Possible topics:
X-ray imaging
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Targeted Radiation Therapy
Nuclear Tracers (Medicine or Environment)
Nuclear Power Generation and Waste Disposal
Remote Sensing using Non-visible Bands
You will be graded according to the content, analysis, and style of your presentation or paper.
Part 1: The background information
You should begin your presentation or paper by giving your audience some background information about your topic. Remember, you should assume that your readers, listeners, or viewers have almost no knowledge of this topic, or physics in general. As you begin to explain the topic, keep these questions in mind:
Why did you choose this topic?
How it relevant to your field of study or work?
Is it a science topic that you have been interested in before this course, or were introduced to it in this course?
For a written explanation, please spend less than one page on background.
Part 2: The explanation
Explain the physics concept at the level that a classmate or colleague can understand without having taken the course or having access to your textbook. Use clear and concise language. Avoid jargon. You may need to provide descriptions of ideas or concepts to support your topic. You should include references to outside sources used in your presentation. This is easy to do in a written report.
Analysis: 40%
(40% of the project grade)
Evaluate the relevance of the topic to our understanding of physics. Some questions to consider covering in your paper/presentation:
How does this topic have practical application in society?
How does it lead to other fundamental concepts?
Do you foresee any future concepts or technologies being developed from this topic?
The analysis of topic should be between 1 and 2 written pages or equivalently
