Essay 2: The Synthesis
The objective of this assignment is to synthesize the main ideas of two texts. (Assigned texts are available through Canvas.) Synthesis is defined as making connections across multiple sources of information to support a new idea or thesis. It involves the critical reading of written sources, categorizing information, organizing ideas, and developing an original thesis that can be supported by the sources.
A synthesis essay has several requirements:
• A single, clear thesis statement makes a claim that is not tied to the two texts but does use unique evidence from both texts as support.
• Focused topic sentences advance the thesis claim while also defining and directing their respective paragraphs.
• An interesting and functional introduction and conclusion serve to ease the reader into, and then out of, the discussion.
• All assertions are supported by direct reference to the texts in the form of quoted evidence.
• A Summary section provides brief, comprehensive summaries of both texts. These summaries highlight information relevant to the synthesis section, and they serve as a strong foundation for that section.
• A Synthesis section does the following in each of several paragraphs: 1. Based on one of the points of synthesis between the two texts, use the topic sentence to make a unique claim that is separate from the two texts but incorporates elements of each. 2. Support this claim with quoted evidence from both texts. 3. Explain the relationship between the two quotes and how, together, they support the claim in the topic sentence.All paragraphs in the synthesis section unify with the thesis.
• Proper MLA format is followed in the paper, the works cited page, and all quotation and citation.
Length Requirement: Three to five pages, double-spaced.
