For this assignment you will put your analytical skills to work with the support of at least 2 relevant, reliable sources to writea 4- to 5-page (not counting works cited list) comparison of either the two stories we read for our course or two things within one story (e.g. two characters, two settings, etc.).
Comparing and contrasting involve analyzing two selected texts or elements to understand the texts more clearly for having examined them together. Comparison emphasizes similarities, while contrast stresses differences. You can put emphasis where you see fit. Think whether the two things you compare speak to the same idea or take different approaches. Explain the relevance or significance of the differences and/or similarities. Since your essay must make an argument, consider what the exercise of comparing and contrasting reveals about the two texts/elements. What do you gain by reading them side-by-side? Do not separate your essay into two halves; instead, go back and forth between the two things you’re comparing and contrasting. An example is provided in Blackboard. Choose one of the following ideas or come up with your own:
Compare and contrast two things in one of the stories. For example: compare/contrast characters, settings, symbols, or two meanings of the same symbol.
Make your argument for your comparison/contrast of the stories using a thesis supported by examples from the stories to support your reading of them. Cite quotes correctly in the essay using MLA format. Use the relevant vocabulary for discussing/writing about fiction. Avoid using summary excessively; let your opinions shine. Include a works cited list on the last page of the essay.
the two short stories are
“Everyday Use,” Alice Walker
“Girl,” Jamaica Kincaid
