In the early history of the village of Cleveland, much of the development of the village was led by individuals such as Samuel Huntington, David Hudson, Henry Trumbull, etc. What role do individuals play in the origins and development of a city? How crucial do you think they leadership is in the development of the city?

2. Explain the role social and cultural institutions (churches, theatres, libraries) played in the development of the early city of Cleveland. How important are these social and cultural institutions to the social development of the city? Do you think they are as important today as they were in the past? Why or why not?

3. One of the major development of the early history of the city was the origins and development of the Ohio and Erie Canal. Explain, in detail, how the city obtained the rights to build a canal to Cleveland. Using this process as a case study, explain the role politics plays in the development of infrastructure projects (roads, bridges etc) for a city. Why are these projects important?

4. Explain the economic impact of the Ohio and Erie Canal upon the development of the City of Cleveland. Using the economic impact canal as a case study, develop and argument why it is important for the City of Cleveland to fund such projects in the present.

5. After 1825, the City of Cleveland saw the influx of German, Irish and African-American migrants to the city of Cleveland. Explain the origins of those migrations and the effect these migrations had upon the city in the early 19th century. How important are migrants to the development of a city?

6. Beginning in the early 19th century, a new social class developed in the city. This was the working class. Explain how working class jobs developed in the city before 1860. What were the three ways in which workers could respond to the low wages and bad working conditions in the City? Explain the world of working women in the early 19t he century.

7. Explain the political development of the city from 1825 to 1845. What role did political parties play in the City at this time? What new city officials were created during this time period? Why was there a “Battle of the Bridge”?

8. Explain the reasons for the development of railroads in Cleveland before the Civil War. What effect did the railroads have upon the development of Cleveland? Using the railroads as an case study, what impact do you think the development of new technology has upon a city?

9. As a result of the economic and social development of the early 19th century, a number of social changes occurred in the city. Explain those changes. How did the elite families, especially women, of Cleveland react to those changes? What motivated their interested in social problems?
10. Explain the development of the anti-slavery movement in the City of Cleveland from 1820-1860. What was the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue Case. Using the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue Case as an example, what “lessons” can the case teach us?
