Students will choose a specific issue, event, or movement (past or present) from their selected Muslim country or region. Develop a thesis and explain the significance of your selected topic to the country, region, and/or the world (if applicable). Research the multiple perspectives on the issue, paying attention to the cause-and-effect forces at play (political, economic, religious/sectarian, environmental, etc.) and how these have influenced the selected community.
Students will conduct research to identify and understand different perspectives on their selected topic (at least 6 different sources required)
NOTE: Six sources required, of which, at least 4 must be peer-reviewed articles
Students will write an 8–10-page paper summarizing, analyzing, and reflecting on the issue and the perspectives to which they were introduced, and how their own knowledge and perspective was broadened and/or changed through their research.
Themes to consider as you are brainstorming for topics:
Political (voting rights, legal protections, authority, corruption, etc.).
Social (gender and minority rights, education, social justice, health, food, etc.).
Economic (investment projects – military, infrastructure, poverty, etc.).
Religious (sectarian/communal issues, religious tolerance, “church” and state, etc.). Environmental (pollution, deforestation, loss of wildlife habitat, water, other resources).
Security: (regional and global relations, alliances or disputes, internal security, etc.)
Things to include:
Provide a brief overview of the issue you chose.
Explain the significance of the issue to the country, region and the world.
Explain and analyze the discourse concerning the topic. Pay special attention to and analyze the multiple perspectives and theories related to the topic.
What were your conceptions before you began this research project? Did you find your conceptions challenged/changed? If so, how?
