1) Personal Narrative: For your first essay, you are to write a personal narrative. A narrative is a first-person account of an experience in your life. This will help your instructor get to know you better. Everyone has a story. What is your story? What is an event in your life that holds significance to you? Why is it significant? Why is it meaningful? In writing your narrative you should communicate to your reader the meaning and significance of your story.
Additional Guidance: This assignment has two goals: to describe a significant experience and to argue why the experience was significant.
You are free to choose any experience you think was significant for you, but make sure to provide details to the reader so that he or she can visualize the experience, and to argue why the experience was significant. There are many ways of organizing this essay, so don’t worry about what the ‘correct’ structure should be. Here’s a sample outline for this paper:
Provide a narrative of what happened by using concrete language. Show what happened instead of just telling the reader.
Explain to the reader why the event was significant for you. The experience could be as short as a few seconds–a traumatic accident–or as long as years.
You are free to write as many paragraphs as you’d like, but make sure to follow the goals of this assignment.
Essay Guidelines:
All essays must be typed, double spaced, in Times New Roman font, 12 point
Page margins should be 1”
You are expected to use proper grammar and mechanics—refer to a grammar guide as needed:
