A few tips on how to read poetry.
1. Read for final marks of punctuation (periods, question marks, semi-colons, etc.) NOT lines.
2. After each sentence, identify the verb (what action is taking place) and the subject (who or what is performing the action).
3. You should be able to summarize each sentence.
4. Be willing to reread. Poetry is a very dense genre; sometimes it takes more than one read through.
Edmund Baugh’s 1986 poem is incredibly evocative. As you move through it, try to think about the way he links the past and the present.
For your discussion post this week. Explain to your classmates how Baugh seeks to alter our relationship to the past. This should be about a paragraph.
