Among monographs we are reading in this course are Patricia Cline Cohen’s book, The
Murder of Helen Jewett, Walter Johnson’s book, Soul by Soul, Charles Dew’s book,
Apostles of Disunion, Drew Faust’s book, This Republic of Suffering, and Nicholas
Lemann’s book Redemption: The Last Battle of the Civil War. Each of these books
offers a window into a facet of American history that reveals much about the social
values, cultural practices, and the legal systems in which the American people of the
nineteenth century participated and experienced.
