The major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide are a function of multiple different health behaviors, such as smoking, diet, sedentary lifestyle, and risky alcohol use, many of which often co-occur. Thus, in many instances, individuals may need to change multiple health behaviors at once.
Examples include:
a. A person who has suffered a heart attack and needs help improving his or her diet and quitting smoking;
b. Someone newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which often requires changes in diet, exercise, and medication adherence;
c. Reducing illicit drug use and risky sexual behavior in persons at-risk for contracting HIV
As you might imagine, multiple health behavior change (MHBC) is a difficult endeavor. As a health psychology professional, it may be your job to help such an individual start the journey to meaningful behavior change. You will make decisions about which behavior(s) to tackle first, which evidence-based methods should be used to do so, and how to deal with setbacks along the way.
To prepare:
Think about situations that might require a person to change multiple behaviors in the same context. Do you think it would be better to approach them one at a time? All at once? After giving this some thought, review this week’s Learning Resources on MHBC.
Review the Spring, Schneider, McFadden et al. (2012) article, “Multiple Behavior Change in Diet and Activity: A Randomized Controlled Trial Using Mobile Technology,” and consider how this intervention is unique and how it might be improved.
