Select one of the topics below. Using what you learned about illustration in this chapter, write an illustration essay on one of these topics. Choose a topic your readers might find unfamiliar or challenging and that you can illustrate effectively with examples. You must make a point (thesis statement) about your topic and then use examples and sub-examples to explain/support your thesis. Depending on the topic you choose, you may need to conduct library or Internet research.
1. Explain what you consider to be the three most important qualities of a college instructor. Support your opinion with vivid examples from your experience.
2. Explain to a general audience the role played by grandparents within a family, citing examples from your own family or other families you know well.
3. In “Rambos of the Road,” Martin Gottfried explains the concept of “auto macho,” also known as “road rage,” using examples from his own experience. Explain the concept of peer pressure, using examples from your experience.

7. Explain the popularity of a certain sport, hobby, trend, or type of media programming
(ie, television, radio, social media)
8. Explain a concept from one of your courses, such as stress management or ergonomic
design
9. Explain effective (or ineffective) parenting (or “pet”-parenting)
10. In many cultures, proverbs (wise sayings) are passed down through generations, and
people learn from and live by these sayings.
• Select one proverb or saying that you have heard (such as from your parents,
grandparents, friends, teachers, in the media). Using examples, explain the meaning and significance of this proverb.
