So far this semester, we have read and talked about the roles schools play in American society. In particular we have discussed different ways of thinking about the purpose(s) or goal[s) of education. Explain which of the different understandings of the purposes of education we have discussed and read about make the most sense to you? Why? How does it connect to your own reasons for being interested in teaching? If schools were really designed to achieve the goal you find most important, what would they look like or do?

In your answer, you should engage with at least two of the readings from weeks 1-4. You can use that reading to help explain why you feel the way you do (in other words, you can use the author’s argument or evidence from the text to support/illuminate your own perspective). Or you can talk about why you disagree with the points an author is making and what you think instead.
