HCOM 100 – Persuasive Speech Assignment

Welcome to the second and final major speech of the semester. This will be a persuasive speech. You will need to attempt to persuade us to think a certain way, change our attitudes, or take action. This assignment is worth 100 points. This is a 6-8 minute speech and it WILL be timed.

Assignment Criteria:
1. Speech Outline (15 points):
You will submit a typed, 12-point Times New Roman font, phrase/keyword outline before you give your speech. Use the same format that was required for your informative speech. Your outline should include in-text citations throughout and a complete reference list at the end in correct APA format (see sample outline provided at the end of this assignment sheet). Failure to turn in an outline will reflect negatively on your total speech grade. I will be happy to review your outline with you before your presentation. Note: You will not be given the opportunity to resubmit this outline.

2. Supporting Materials:
You will use a minimum of 4 different credible sources in this speech. Wikipedia is NOT a credible source! You may use books, scholarly journals, valid Internet sources, etc. Make sure that you evaluate your sources for credibility. If you use sources with poor credibility your grade will be impacted negatively. YOU MUST CITE YOUR SOURCES ORALLY! This means your audience needs to hear you address your sources during your speech.

3. Structure:
Note: I strongly suggest you study the evaluation sheet you received for your informative speech and analyze the elements I will be looking for in your structure, as they are very similar. The structure will be evaluated based on how closely you follow the following guidelines:

I. Introduction
A. Attention getter
B. Establish relevance to the audience (why should we listen to you? How does your topic affect us?)
C. Thesis and preview of the discussion

II. Body
A. Main Point 1: Problem & Effects (include evidence to support your claims and orally cite sources)
B. Main Point 2: Causes (include evidence to support your claims and orally cite sources)
C. Main Point 3: Solutions (personal, policy) (include evidence to support your claims and orally cite
sources)

III. Conclusion
A. Summary of discussion
B. Call to action/Clincher
4. Evaluation (85 points):

You will be evaluated based on the following:
1. Clear and logical organization of speech (Introduction, Body, Conclusion)
2. Use and effectiveness of attention getter
3. Inclusion of speech elements as covered in lecture (thesis statement in the introduction, preview, summary
in conclusion, concluding thought)
4. Construction and effectiveness of persuasive argument (adequate use of rhetorical proofs)
5. Accurate citation of sources
6. Effective use of transition statements
7. Adherence to time limits

Additional Factors:
Time: Your speech needs to be at least 6 minutes but no more than 8 minutes long. Points will be deducted for going under or over your time.

Final Guidelines:
Your speech will be evaluated based on the following
Clear and logical organization of speech (Introduction, Body, Conclusion)
2. Use and effectiveness of attention getter
3. Inclusion of speech elements as covered in lecture (thesis statement in the introduction,
preview, summary, in conclusion, concluding thought)
4. Accurate citation of sources
5. Effective use of transition statements
