Although this is an exam, I will provide guidance and assistance when I can. And I am always happy to look at one rough draft answer before submission.
(200 points)
1. Why is anthropology referred to as a four-fields discipline? What are these four fields? Finally, how has globalization impacted anthropological study? Please reference material you feel is appropriate to this question from either one of these assigned films: Margaret Mead: Coming of Age or Herskovits at the Heart of Blackness. Please provide clear explanations and examples in your answer.
2. How do anthropologists define culture? Why do they discuss human agency and how it relates to culture and power? What insights did you learn from watching Culture Clash? Please provide clear explanations and examples in your answer.
3. Explain why ethnography is considered both a science and an art. Why are the concepts of reflexivity and engaged anthropology vital to conducting socially responsible fieldwork? What did Malinowski teach us about fieldwork in Bronislaw Malinowski: Off the Veranda? Please provide clear explanations and examples in your answer.
4. While anthropologists have gone to lengths to show that languages are linguistically equal, languages often exist in a hierarchical manner within a given place. Compare how language and power intersect by discussing how nonprestige languages may be marginalized. How is this illustrated in The Language You Cry In? Please provide clear explanations and examples in your answer.
5. Identify three reasons why anthropologists feel that the concept of “race” is a flawed system of classification. What happened when this system of classification was challenged in Anatomy of Prejudice: Jane Elliott’s Seminar on Race? Please provide clear explanations and examples in your answer.
6. Read this story and connect what is happening in contemporary society to the text’s explanations of ethnicity and nationalism. Be sure to address in and out groups as well as the danger of ethnic pride. Xenophobia as a virus, click on this Link (link https://www.npr.org/2020/03/02/811363404/when-xenophobia-spreads-like-a-virus)to read the story. You may listen to the podcast if you like, but I am only asking you to respond to the short article for this question.
7. Discuss what is meant by ethnicity as a source of opportunity? What is heritage tourism and how can it benefit a society? How do you feel about the marketing of ethnicity in such a manner? Be sure to provide detailed explanations and examples in your answer.
