To that end, be sure to establish why your topic is important and why your research question needs to be answered (the exigence of your topic). In other words, why should your audience care about this topic? How do the issues, problems, or controversies related to your topic affect the discourse community you talked about in your inquiry?

Write a research proposal elaborating on your research question, stating in clear terms what you want to learn and/or accomplish through your research. Based on the library orientation that was held on Monday of last week (see the videos on our course’s library guide for a review if need be) and the time you’ve spent so far perusing non-academic sources on the web, develop a plan for gathering high-quality sources that can provide you with the information and insight you need to answer your research question and any other questions you may posit. Remember that you are not writing your main research paper just yet; you will do that in Unit 3. As such, you should not write an argument about your topic for this paper.

Be specific about what types of sources and databases you plan to look at. Do you plan to search by subject (i.e. nursing, history, science, technology, government and politics, etc.)? Or do you plan to do a more general search? Consider both academic and non-academic sources in your plan. Are there any non-academic sources that might be useful to answering your research question? Is there someone–an expert in the field you’re researching, perhaps–you might like to interview for more insight? Are there any primary sources that you can consult? Consider all of the possibilities.

If you quote, paraphrase, or summarize information, ideas, or arguments from any outside sources in your paper, you must give credit to the original author via a verbal attribution (i.e. According to John Smith OR John Smith asserts that…) and/or an in-text citation (Smith 95) OR (Smith, 2013, pp. 95-96), etc. You must also include the source on a Works Cited or References page at the end of the document (on its own separate page), cited properly in your chosen format, as explained in the instructions of Process Assignment 1-2 from last week.
