Each of the Units has a reading assignment that is to be delivered to the instructor in forms permitted by the instructor. You are to read the assigned readings (available by link) and answer the questions posted on this Reading Assignment Sheet that go with the reading(s).

I prefer that you use Microsoft Word but it’s not required. You are NOT to attach or link your essay. You will copy and paste it from your original word processing program as text into the space provided when you turn in your assignment.
Is there a format that I must use for my reading assignment response? You will lose 10 points for not following instructions!

Does the response have to be a certain length?
The response should be in essay form with paragraphs as directed. It will be graded based on how well you follow directions, evidence that you have taken time to fully understand the reading and have responded appropriately. The essay MUST be a minimum of 300 words.

Begin your essay by explaining which of these readings is a “primary source” reading and which is a “secondary source” reading. Do NOT copy a definition from another source. You may have to look up what each means, but put it into your own words.
Explain why many African Americans who had been slaves changed their name after the end of the Civil War. What was the significance of a person choosing a name like “Freeman” or “Lincoln”? What was significant about towns like Mound Bayou, Mississippi? What security did towns like Mound Bayou give to its residents?
What three categories of African Americans does the “Mississippi Black Code 1865” single out in the various laws that are included in this excerpt? Explain why African Americans were frustrated over the failure of the government’s promise of land to them. What does the “Mississippi Black Code 1865” excerpt say about the rights of freedmen, free Negroes and mulattoes to own property? to rent or lease property? What in the codes discourages any white person from associating with freedmen, free Negroes and mulattoes? What was the incentive for someone to return or report finding an African American who had violated their labor contract?
In the next paragraph, using evidence from the reading “The Meaning of Black Freedom,” explain the importance of the following to African Americans after the Civil War: reuniting their family; the church; education.
In your conclusion, think about events in the 21st century (today). Explain why Nannie Helen Burroughs and Virginia Broughton were involved in something that has a very modern theme. Also, consider the implications concerning the word “equality” as applied to African Americans in these readings when compared to whites at that time. Can you think of examples of any group of people in the United States today that are not treated equally to “whites” today? Support your answer.
