Instructions: Please respond to the following two prompts after reading Chapters 1 & 2 in the textbook and looking through the Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 PowerPoints posted to the module. Please base your responses on information found in the assigned readings and on the images included in this module’s PowerPoints. Do your best to phrase your responses in your own words. Each response should be a couple of paragraphs in length. If you quote from or closely paraphrase the textbook, please keep it to a minimum, and include quotation marks where necessary and (Kleiner page # or section title) at the end of the sentence/paragraph. Plagiarized responses will not receive credit.
Chapter 1
1. Many Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) figurines (small sculptures) depict women and are believed to have been fertility charms; this includes the Venus of Willendorf (Figure 1-4). How can we understand the meaning and function of Venus of Willendorf through its forms? Include a detailed description of the object in your response with an emphasis on its size and the lines, shapes, and proportions seen.
Chapter 2
2. Both the Akkadian Victory Stele of Naram-Sin (Figure 2-13) and the Babylonian Stele with the Laws of Hammurabi (Figure 2-18) are stele. First explain what a stele is (you may use the textbook’s glossary). Next, describe the imagery seen in each work with an emphasis on how the rulers are rendered. Be certain to identify which king is depicted alongside a deity and which king is depicted as divine (and how is his divinity implied).
