Pros and Cons of Hosting the Olympics
Hosting
the Olympics, a global sports competition across different cities globally can
offer tremendous benefits to the host country. The sporting event boosts
tourism, international trade, and national pride. However, the Olympics can
also cause financial leakage, non-reusable infrastructural developments, and
human displacement. These three arguments offer exciting insights into
understanding the requirements for and effects of hosting the Olympics and form
the basis of this short essay.
They
were grasping the financial drain that the Olympic Games may cause budgeting
committees for such events to plan effectively and account for possible cost
overruns. Believing this viewpoint would help determine the circumstances under
which hosting the event is a loss-making endeavor, such as the current coronavirus
pandemic. During the war and economic uncertainty, postponing or preceding the
event is rational. For instance, the 2004 Athens Games destabilized an already
struggling Greek economy (ProCon.org, 2021).
The
result of finished constructions that targeted the Olympics only is disuse and
disrepair afterward. Considering this standpoint may help planners incorporate
long-term plans for such establishments, encouraging them to maintain their
conditions. Believing this perspective would help one observe the enormous
financial investments rendered useless by the Games’ conclusion. This idea may
be sensible when examining examples like Greece, China, and Brazil, whose
former Olympic infrastructures are not in use, despite costing millions of
dollars to maintain annually (ProCon.org, 2021).
Issues
of displacement introduce discussions on the human cost of financial strategies
with short-term benefits. For instance, 1.5 million people were displaced to
create room for the construction of stadia and accommodation facilities for
visitors (ProCon.org, 2021). People lost homes in which they had lived their
entire lives, an aspect that one would notice if they supported this viewpoint.
This idea is rational to countries hosting an event of such magnitude for the
first time in their history. Structures meant to host sportspeople, and their
staff need new construction but become useless later.
In
conclusion, hosting the Olympics can be a source of national pride, trade, and
tourism. However, the negative consequences are also worth examining. These
opposing viewpoints are necessary to appreciate both sides of the debate and
introduce perspectives and critical details that boost an overall understanding
of the issue. Therefore, countries eager to host the Olympics advised examining
their circumstances and long-term plans before claiming the opportunity.
