Exploring FAA CRM Guidance

Overview
As addressed in your reading assignment, there are three FAA Advisory Circulars (ACs) that provide guideline on CRM training for commercial airlines. The current versions are AC 120-51E dated 1/22/04, 120-35D dated 3/13/15, and 120-54A, Change 1, dated 1/31/17. However, these ACs were initially published in 1989, 1978, and 1991, respectively, but revised throughout the years.
Instructions
Using the FAA’s Advisory Circular Website and the internet, determine the revisions for each of the three CRM ACs. For example, AC 120-51 was originally published in 1989 and version “E” was published in 2004. What are the dates of all the versions published for AC 120-51 between 1989 and 2004? In the same way, determine a version history for 120-35 and 120-54.
Review the details of these revisions and look at the progressions that are revealed with each update.
This assignment is about understanding how to access the ACs and where to find the most current publication as well as understanding the specific changes. Go directly to the FAA website (below) and search ACs and it will come up with all versions, current and previous for the number.
A few tips.. do not add the letters AC in the search bar, just the numbers. So when searching for AC 120-51, put in only 120-51 in the search bar. Youll also need to select the status as All rather than current in order to view previous versions. This should show you the entire history of publications regarding each AC you enter. If a version has been removed from the website, you will not be responsible for it. There is only one version that has been removed. All other versions are available. Be prepared to do some digging to locate them.
List the publication dates as a history timeline for each of the three given ACs and note the principle changes made with each new publication. These changes are typically found within the first 3 paragraphs of the document, but can be found throughout. Look for the black lines in the margins – these indicate recent changes made. For example, 120-51E replaced 120-51D. If you click on the cancelled 120-51D there is a link to the pdf for this version, which indicates changes that were updated from the 120-51C version. Just follow the links and youll do fine.
