Update 10/3 – Class – let this paper assignment reflect your (un)known history — think of the history of the area in which your group exists. This could be family, institution, community. Let’s make sure we meet together one to one to map out ideas you have about the paper. Immediately make appointments with the library and tutors to go over what this assignment entails.

Seek out—through library searches and discussions with others—who “made” the history or backstory of the group you identified in Assignment #1, whether known only locally or created and narrated officially. Identify the primary actor (like Cesar Chavez) and others (like Eliseo Medina and Chris Hartmire) who also helped make history—even if that history is still unfolding. How did their actions change an organization, a location, or a culture? What resistance did they meet? How did they change things? Why were things ripe for changes?

Take notes from your sources and also keep track of their origins, including where the article or chapter appeared. For this assignment, to make your life easier when you begin assembling your final research paper, be sure to choose a group, organization, or place that has at least some written history about it—even if present only in more informal sources like underground newspapers (in print and online). However, you should ensure that (1) you can conduct more formal research with this focus for your next two assignments and (2) you can find someone to interview as one of your sources. These steps ensure you won’t need to change your topic later in the semester and start your project over again. Ballpark length: 750 words.
