Family Systems Counseling Case Study

This is a case study for my Family Systems Counseling class. The 4 references can not be older than 2018.

Tomas and Arlene are seeking family therapy because they disagree on parenting styles. Tomas is Latino and Arlene is Chinese-American. The couple has 4 children: 3 girls ages 14,10, 7, and one 4-year-old son. For this intake session, only Tomas and Arlene are present upon your request. You notice Arlene is wearing dark glasses and she declines your request to remove them. Tomas starts out the session by telling you that Arlene is a disgrace and that she is not the wife and mother he wants her to be. Arlene is observably upset but says she does not want to disagree with her husband. She tells you that she swore she would never become her own mother who had physical confrontations with Arlene’s father. The parenting issue they present you with is that Arlene likes to talk to her children and engage them in solutions to their problems. Tomas thinks this is disrespectful and that his children need to do what he says when he says it because he is the father.
The entire family is present for the second session. The girls appear tense and withdrawn, looking at their father for approval to speak. The young son appears detached and distracted.
