Discussion Prompt
Discuss, as carefully as you can, the performances in this film. Does each actor seem especially suited to the role he or she plays? Explain why (or why not). Take into account their onscreen/offscreen mythology when making this assessment. Depending on your familiarity (or lack thereof) with the actors, you may need to do some research into their lives and careers in order to evaluate their star personas.
Next, undertake a close textual reading of at least ONE SCENE and how the actors in it have decided to tackle the dramatic beats (i.e., key moments that reveal new information or advance the action). Richard Dyer’s five performance signs (from the assigned reading) must be used to frame your analysis. Do the performance signs result in the actor’s performance being more naturalistic or more non-naturalistic? How do the performance choices of one actor adapt and respond to those of the other actor(s) in your chosen scene? Be attentive to possible subtext conveyed by the five performance signs.
