Critical Essay/Philosophy Statement- Your job is to make a tentative statement about your philosophy of at least one conflict/tension/pattern/issue of education. You are probably early in your career, so I don’t expect you to have definitive answers now. Rather, you should map out your tentative answers to a compelling question about education. You will gather evidence to support your philosophical statement from at least three different readings from the class, examining both the positive and negative aspects of each standpoint. Explain how each reading that you choose to discuss has informed the unique philosophical stance you take. Support any observations or claims you make with evidence pulled directly from the texts. Tips: • Take a stance—what is the purpose of public schooling? For example, you might discuss topics such as acculturation, assimilation, development of human capital, 14 promoting freedom, strengthening democracy, or transforming society. • Synthesize your unique philosophical argument, and demonstrate how the readings you have analyzed have informed your understanding of the purpose of public schooling. • I will forward readings/ films we used in class – I would like to be informed once the first paragraph/ philosophy statement is done to make sure we are on the right track.
