Please read these directions from start to end. There are several important requirements for this essay and forgetting to complete some puts you at risk of getting a low grade.
For this essay you will find 5 fallacies in arguments posted on social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, etc.). There are more fallacies than we talked about in class (see this link for a larger list ,(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fallacies#Informal_fallacies), and you are welcome to find any of them. It’s not a hard requirement, but please try to pick some posts that are about computer science issues. Here are a few hot topics at the moment that might be easy to find fallacious arguments about:
-Robots will/won’t take people’s jobs
-Self-driving cars are good/bad
-Children shouldn’t have a smartphone because XYZ
-Facebook/Google/Apple/Amazon/etc. is evil
-China/Russia is/isn’t spying on us/hacking our elections
Directions: Write an essay of at least 1000 words with the following structure:
-An introduction paragraph
-Multiple paragraphs (as many as you need but at least 5), each containing the following:
-1 quoted social media post
– an analysis of why and how that post contains a fallacy
-You must provide the name of the fallacy. See the Wikipedia
link above.
-A conclusion paragraph
Additional requirement: I’m well aware that ad hominem is the easiest fallacy to find, so you are only allowed to use 2 ad hominem fallacies out of your 5 fallacies total.
