For this assignment, visit a health food store (e.g., Whole Foods). Ask if the manager (or other staff) would be willing to give you a brief on-site tour of the business. The tour could just include letting you know how the store is organized, types of products available, etc. What is the goal of having a health food stores versus a regular supermarket? Visit the supermarket you most frequent as well. Identify 4 to 5 snack products that you would typically purchase in a regular supermarket. Reviewing the nutritional label, compare the nutritional value of each of the items in the health food store then compare it with the product purchased in the regular supermarket (commercial food items). Use the handout provided to gather your data (whole50 food list; Reading labels). Pay attention to the nutritional labels (i.e., sugar content; corn syrup first?). Write a short report on the nutritional advantages of the health food product over the commercial food product. How will you incorporate the information learned into your life?
As you are exploring the supermarkets, keep in mind that supermarkets typically place produce (fresh fruits and vegetables) and most perishables in the perimeter of the store. Highly processed food (in cans, etc.) will me found more in the interior of the store. You may be able to find some healthy choice in the center (i.e., dried beans, grains, etc.).
