1) Taxonomy
a. Give the organism’s full taxonomic categorization, from kingdom to species or
subspecies. Explain briefly why it’s in each taxonomic category. For example, anything
in Mammalia has hair and lactates. (Use can use EOL.org to get his information.)
2) Geographic Range
a. Provide a map showing where it migrates, giving its summer and winter ranges etc.
3) Push/Pull Factors
a. Explain why it migrates. You can discuss ecological/biological/reproductive
requirements and push-pull factors. How long does it take to make its journey? Does it
migrate once per season, or more frequently? What hurdles does it encounter?
4) Tracking Technology
a. Explain how scientists track your organism’s migration. What technology is used?
5) Human Influence
a. Explain how human activity is influencing it. Human activity affects all migratory
animals.
Length: 1,500 words minimum (~6 pages double spaced, excluding bibliography). Be concise, and be
efficient, and be engaging. As you build your paper, ask yourself “Am I answering the required
questions outlined above in the order they’re presented?”
References: For all papers the information you obtain about your topic must come from a minimum
of five different sources. Each of these sources must be cited in the text of your paper. See class
handout for more on citing sources. Use the references provided in the book as a way to get more
information about your subject. Acceptable sources of information include published materials,
including books, scientific journals, magazines, newspapers, etc. Unpublished Internet material,
such as dot-com or dot-org web pages can be shallow, inaccurate, and misleading. Pages like
Wikipedia are a good start, but don’t cite Wikipedia as a source of information in this assignment.
Cite the sources you found in it. If you rely on Wikipedia, for this assignment your paper will lack a
thesis and adequate depth.
Figures: Use images to convey information. Maps, photographs, graphs, charts, tables etc. are all
strongly encouraged for this assignment. All figures (maps, photos, charts, tables etc.) must be
numbered sequentially, mentioned in the text, and be informative and relevant. Each figure must
have a brief caption explaining what it is the reader is seeing and why it’s important, relevant, and
useful. This caption must be written in your own words.
Paper Format: Please stick to these rules:
1. Give a title page.
2. Give an abstract. An abstract concisely summarizes the major points of the paper in 60
words or less.
3. You must use the INTRODUCTION—BODY—CONCLUSION format in your paper.
i. INTRODUCTION: Right below the abstract, also on page 1, start the
paper with a section labeled “Introduction.” Here you give the
background information and provide a hook to engage the reader. You
also state exactly what the paper will discuss in the same order as
discussed in the paper.
ii. BODY: The body of the paper is NOT labeled “Body.” Each major
section/topic is given a subheading label so that I know what you’re
going to cover next. The first subheading will be “Taxonomy” etc.
iii. CONCLUSION: The conclusion briefly wraps the whole thing up and bids
a fond farewell to the dear reader. The conclusion is labeled
“Conclusion.”
4. The last page of your paper should be your bibliography listing your citations.
Checklist and grading criteria: Make sure you have satisfied the following criteria:
1. Topic is adequately researched, provides sufficient detail about the subject.
2. Paper is formatted according to the rules specified above.
3. Minimum 1,500 words in length, and all text is double spaced.
4. Paper has been very carefully proof read and is free of grammatical errors.
5. All figures are numbered sequentially, e.g. Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, etc. and have a
caption in your own words right below them providing a brief explanation of the figure.
6. All figures have the source from which they come right below them. If it’s a webpage
use the URL. Even if you created the figure yourself you will need to cite yourself.
7. Paper is entirely in your own words (except where quotes are used).
8. All pages are numbered.
