The purpose of this component is to give your reader a general perception and comprehension of the artwork’s visual outlook. Avoid subjective opinions and focus only on what you see. Please be aware that not all artworks will show the use of all elements of art or all principles of design.
ELEMENTS OF ART—choose 2 or 3 elements that capture your attention

value/intensity—lightness and darkness of colors (full scale, low or high range of tones,
tint and shades) and purity of colors (primary, secondary or tertiary)
texture—the actual or true texture of an art object or represented texture in a
painted/drawn/printed/photographed/embroidered object

DEFINITION:
Formal Analysis is a specific type of visual description. Unlike ekphrasis, it is not meant to evoke the work in the reader’s mind. Instead, it is an explanation of visual structure, of the ways in which visual elements have been arranged and function within a composition. Strictly speaking, neither content nor historical context is considered. The purest formal analysis is dedicated to what the viewer sees. Because it explains how the eye is led through a work, this kind of description provides a solid foundation for other types of analysis.
