Formal Recommendation Report

Compose a formal recommendation report in which you compare and contrast three
automobiles within a particular class (e.g., SUV, compact, hybrid) with the goal of making a
recommendation to your organization about the type of car they should be purchasing for
“company cars.” Your audience is the purchasing managers of your organization, and, of
course, the users of the fleet of company cars; their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with your
choice could have a real impact on your future.

etc.) that will guide your decision
• Select a vehicle class
• Narrow your list of potential cars in that class to three
• Gather articles, videos, and other sources that will help you make your
recommendation.
• Write each designated section. Adding graphs, photos, charts, and tables (where
appropriate) will enrich your report.

10-12 pages for the report itself, including title page, table of contents, reference list, etc. Use
the “formal report” format specified in the Alred, Brusaw, and Oliu text (see competency 4:
goal 1, along with competency 4, goal 3). If you completed the practice assessments for goals 3
and 4, feel free to use them in completing this final assessment.
In addition, you will compose a 2-3 page “rhetorical analysis” in which you describe the
following, including specific examples in each case:
• Audience, purpose, and context
• Logical and rhetorical strategies
• Style, mechanics, and adaptation for ESL audiences
• Your ethically defensible, dialogic stance
• Role, possibilities, and norms of speech
• Your use of the genre
• Your methods, successes, and failures in conducting your research
