Hedda Gabler Analysis Paper
You will write a 600-700 word essay using MLA format that responds to one of the following topics.
As with any play, Hedda Gabler is full of forwards that provide signs of coming action. When performed by actors, these forwards are more compelling; however, when we read the plays, we often miss this dramatic tension.
According to David Ball, “A forward is any of a myriad of devices, techniques, tricks, maneuvers, manipulations, appetizers, tantalizers, teasers, that make an audience eager for what’s coming up.”
Choose one of these moments and evaluate 3 of its forwards. Look throughout the play for the forwards, for oftentimes we are given clues pages earlier—not just immediately prior to the act.
Moment 1: Mrs. Elvsted living at Aunt Julie’s and working with Tesman
Moment 2: Judge Brack’s final hold on Hedda
Moment 3: Hedda’s decision to destroy the manuscript
Use specific dialogue/stage directions to support your points.
The only texts you are allowed to use are the Norton and Backwards & Forwards.
The essay cannot be more than 700 words nor less than 600.
