Father Daniel Groody’s article provides much food for thought, particularly regarding the great inequities in the contemporary world. Whereas the reading from Gaudium et Spes last week presented the Catholic vision of what God desires for humankind (what OUGHT to be), Groody’s article presents an overview of where we actually ARE (what IS the case).
You are invited to share your thoughts as you reflect upon the readings from these two weeks. In Gaudium et Spes, focus ONLY on Chapter 2. Think about some of the points brought out by Groody in light of what Chapter Two of Gaudium et Spes says about the conditions necessary for human well-being. Implications of Human Dignity: Like any red-blooded young man, Francis had big dreams during his youth: he wanted to perform gloriously heroic deeds as a knight! Unfortunately, he had a rude awakening from those dreams when he was captured in battle and spent a year in prison, leading to his spiraling down into depression and discouragement. Having explored the profound and beautiful meaning of human dignity in the previous module, we now turn to an analysis of the effects of our current situation of globalization upon human dignity in the contemporary world: How do real-world conditions measure up to the call for respect for the dignity of each person? And because an understanding of historical background is necessary for understanding events and ideas discussed in this course, we begin a review of key highlights of Christian history.
