After reading the articles on the previous page, think about the topic of Mandatory National Service for one year for all young people from the age of 18 to 24 years old. Do you know anyone who has served in either a National Service or a Military Service? Ask them about their service. Was it a good experience? Did it help them figure out what they wanted to study afterwards? Was it a waste of their time?
Next, decide on your opinion. Ask yourself “To what extent do you think having a one-year National Service requirement for 18 year olds would be helpful for our country, for our society, and for the individuals who participate?” Brainstorm your ideas onto paper. Make a T-Chart and list all of the reasons for a mandatory national service on the left side, and list all of the reasons against it on the right side. Then decide which side makes the most sense to you.
If you believe it would be good for our young adults to commit to a year National Service, you have a Pro opinion – You are for implementing a National Service in the U.S.
If you believe it would not be good for our young adults to commit to a year of National Service, then you have a Con opinion – You are against implementing a National Service in the U.S.
Last, organize your brainstormed ideas into an outline. DO NOT WRITE THE ESSAY YET. Send me your outline by clicking on “Start Assignment” and uploading your file into Canvas. Please do it no later than 4/17 so that I can return your outline to you by our next class on 4/19.
