This reflection exercise is to check for understanding for the main takeaways, demonstrate critical thinking abilities, and share personal thoughts on the piece. The reflection will have a maximum of 3 paragraphs of 6-8 full sentences each (a sample is available in course content section of Blackboard). Each reflection should have the citation from the syllabus at the top of the document. PLEASE NOTE: Students will lose points if this is NOT included.
• First Paragraph-what are the main takeaways from the article?
• Second Paragraph- did the article include a study? If so, give the study details to include
type of study quantitative/qualitative/meta-analysis, etc. Who were participants and how many were there? How did they recruit? How long were interviews, if applicable. Use your 6-8 sentences to give a good overview of the data source(s) without using full sentence quotes taken from the author. If the article is secondary data analysis, you should detail the original source along with the type of analysis performed. Some articles will be more theoretical in nature. For these, use examples of the theories (citing their authors) for your second paragraph. You do not need to add the theory authors to the citation section of your reflection.
• Third paragraph-when the week includes multiple readings, attempt to tie them together or contrast them against each other. Some articles clearly discuss similar concepts while others may build on the original gender literature (week one). This is the critical thinking skill of finding connections or contradictions between articles.
For weeks with singular readings, students can use any previous week’s articles to make connections or contrasts. After the reflection’s last paragraph, add a line “Additional Sources” and add the citation from the compare/contrast article. Only use the articles from the course. The citations can be pulled directly from the syllabus. Do not bring in outside course materials to compare/contrast.
