Semester Report on Population vs. Lifestyle:
I. Collect facts and statistics or data on this topic from lectures, video documentaries, articles from newspapers or journals/magazines, and websites that provide relevant information.
II. In the report (2-4 pages in single space, font size 12), you should layout the facts/data collected (about 50% from the course materials and 50% from your research of other resources) and explain why and how population size and people’s life styles affect environmental quality including global warming.
Give your analysis and answers to the following 3 specific questions, with a minimum 300 words of your own for each question: 1. How does population size affect environmental quality in general? 2. How do people’s lifestyles affect environmental quality? 3. Would you favor population control for a better environment? Why? or Why not? (In your answer to this question, you must refer to the NPR article’s ideas about having fewer kids when you explain. The NPR article is posted as the first link in this week’s course content)
III. please answer the fourth question: what else may you do to help the environment and help others be as environmentally friendly as you? How and why?
IV. The evaluation of your report will be based on the following point allocation: 1. Title, your name, and date 5 2. Clearly stated questions to answer 5 3. Presentation of relevant facts and statistics 35 4. Sources of the facts and/or information* 10 5. Logicality of your opinions draws from the facts 35 6. Bibliography** 10 7. Your paper must reflect that you have collected and used information from both course materials (about 50%) and other sources including Internet.
** Here is the required format of bibliography: For article: Author’s name, journal’s title, and the year when the article is published if available For lecture: Lecture title For video documentary: title of the videotape, location where you download/borrow the video if it is not from the class. For website: Specific address (URL) of the website where you cite your facts (i.e. http://www.newscientist.com/hottopics/population/ is a good citation, but http://www.newscientist.com/ would not be a good citation because this general website doesn’t show the relevant information at the page)
