The global COVID-19 pandemic highlights the importance of GIS, geographic analysis, maps, and data visualization in understand the spread of the coronavirus around the world and in guiding governments and decision-makers come up with public policies that will effectively prevent the spread of the virus and save lives.
For this week’s Discussion Forum, students will reflect on the role of GIS, the use of choropleth maps, and data visualization in communicating the extent of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
1. Read: “Date Visualizations’ Breakthrough Moment in the COVID-19 Crisis,”(Medium.com)
2. Visit and examine:
COVID-19 Dashboard, Johns Hopkins University
World Health Organization Coronavirus (COVID-19) Dashboard
Spend at least 10 minutes per each website to inspect the dashboards and the different maps and visualization. Pay attention to the different map elements, colors, font and labels, symbols and presentation of data.
3. Prepare a summary of what you have learned in the materials above. Specifically, post a thoughtful response that answer the following questions:
a) How do you compare the mapping projects and visualization between the Johns Hopkins University dashboard and the World Health Organization’s dashboard? What makes each one more effective or less effective? Why? Cite specific examples.
b) How do you think GIS and mapping help in communicating the extent of the global COVID-19 pandemic? How can GIS and mapping help in protecting and saving people’s lives during a pandemic?
