Global/ Intercultural communication skill enhancer
Content: This activity encompasses a 55 minute video course by Daisy Lovelace Titled “Communicating about Culturally Sensitive Issue”, reading articles on globalization and intercultural communication, and an interview
Learning objectives/outcome:
1. Identify own biases and prejudices
2. Identify effective ways of overcoming own biases and prejudices
3. Initiate and develop interactions with culturally different others and suspend judgment in valuing interactions with culturally different others
4. Articulates insights into own cultural rules and biases (e.g. seeking complexity; aware of how own experiences have shaped these rules, and how to recognize and respond to cultural biases, resulting in a shift in self-description
5. Formulate and demonstrate respect and appreciation for different cultures

A. Watch video “Communicating about culturally sensitive issues by Daisy Lovelace”
Video can be accessed via New York Public Library (NYPL). NYPL offers remote access to the full Lynda.com (from LinkedIn Learning) collection. To access the video, students need to have a membership to NYPL. B. Interview someone from an ethnic group different than your own
Interview guidelines:
Discuss country of origin or descent, ethnic traditions, food, religions, costumes, social determinants that positively and or negatively impact the group. Ask the interviewee to list two things he/she likes the most and two things he/she likes the least about his/her culture.
Paper outline
After watching the assigned videos, reading the assigned articles, and conducting the interview, write a two to three double space paper that answer the following questions.
1. What is your own ethnic background?
2. What have you learned about your interviewee culture (including country of origin or descent, ethnic traditions, religion, costumes and staple foods, etc)?
3. What are the factors (social determinants) that positively and or negatively affect people from this ethnic group?
4. Provide an example of when you had to use empathy during the interview
5. How did this activity (conducting the interview, watching the videos, and reading the article) help you identify your own biases? Provide an example
6. Formulate two recommendation on how to work with persons whose culture, religion, politics differs from one’s own culture. Include ways we can address a culturally sensitive issue
7. Formulate two recommendations on how to help people change unhealthy practices that have been part of their culture for generations?
Paper should be 2-3 double space pages and should not exceed 3 pages (not including reference and cover pages), must be formatted, cited and referenced according to APA 7th edition. No abstract needed.
