ssignment Descriiption: The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your understanding
of development across the lifespan through your thoughtful application of theory and research to
a case study of your own creation. The creation of your human being should occur throughout the
class and follow the presentation of material in class. The paper you will complete will be a creative
assignment with a heavy research component. Please do not base your human on yourself or others
who are close to you. You will build upon this project over the course of the term, and it will be
broken up as follows:
The fetal development and birth of your human
Your human’s early childhood
Your human’s middle childhood
Your human’s adolescence
Your human’s young adulthood
Your human’s middle adulthood
Final submission – a detailed, comprehensive, research-based written narrative of your
human’s lifespan including their late adulthood and death
Revised June 2021 7
**Please note that your human must live until at least 70 years of age in order for you to
demonstrate knowledge of all developmental stages through older adulthood. The only
exception to this is if your human were born with a genetic anomaly that shortens his or her
life (e.g., Down’s Syndrome). In such cases, you would need to choose one of your human’s
caretakers and describe his or her development from the point of your human’s death until
the caretaker reaches at least 70 years of age.
Student Directions: Students will create a case study and use the case study to write a paper
detailing an intervention for an individual in the population that your specialty serves (e.g., school
counseling—kindergarten aged children; vocational rehabilitation—adult MR clients in a
sheltered workshop; student affairs—freshmen living in residence halls; community counseling—
adults in group home for the chronically mentally ill). The case study should provide a discussion
of the following topics:
Grow Your Own Human Assignment guidelines:
1. Begin by introducing your “human.”
a) Provide demographic characteristics of your human, including gender, socio-economic
status background, ethnicity, cultural background, family composition, parental
characteristics, physical and psychological health, and wellness of your human and family
members. (2.F3i)
b) Remember that these demographics characteristics will impact your developing human at
each stage! For example, in the pregnancy and prenatal development, discussion will
include, but is not limited to development through the trimesters; involvement of the father
(however applicable); mother’s emotional state; fetal development; impact of culture on
pregnancy; mother’s health and nutrition; reactions to birth, etc. Of course, this will also
include critically analyzing the developmental theories of individual and family
development, theories of personality development and learning, and transitions across the
lifespan. (2.F3a, 2.F3b)
c) The same application of the material to your growing human will take place for each
chapter up until the death of your human.
2. Apply the psychosocial stage from each chapter to your developing human.
a) Application includes a (brief) accurate descriiption of the relevant crisis, disasters, trauma
and the experiences of your human that impact the resolution (positive or negative or
somewhere in between) of the crisis, disasters, and trauma they face. (2.F3g)
b) You will also include a section for at least one stage and how your human would deal with
developmental crises, disability, exceptional behavior, addictive behavior,
psychopathology, and situational and environmental factors the affect both normal and
abnormal personality development. (2.F3c, 2.F3d, 2.F3e, 2.F3f)
Revised June 2021 8
c) Be sure to ‘carry through’ the results of a stage’s resolution in a logical manner to later
stages, and explicitly describe the consequences in those later stage sections.
3. Apply other relevant theories and research to your human within each stage.
a) For instance, if you are describing a toddler’s gender identity development, accurately
reference relevant theory or research (as discussed in our class text, for instance) when you
describe the child’s experiences and parental reactions.
b) Do not be limited to information provided in your text. Consulting the literature can only
strengthen your final project. Include all references.
4. Research and apply the concept of resiliency in at least two of your stages of development.
a) Apply the concept of resiliency in a childhood stage (< 18 years old) as it relates to
optimum wellness. (2.F3i)
b) And again, in adulthood (>18 years old) ) as it relates to optimum wellness. (2.F3i)
c) Apply research-based information gleaned from at least 2 professional journal articles to
support your work. Include your articles as an attachment to your final project submission.
5. Discuss a general framework for understanding differing abilities and strategies for
differentiated interventions with your human. (2.F3h)
a) Discuss a general framework for understanding differing abilities and strategies for
differentiated interventions with your human. (2.F3h)
6. Keep a journal.
a) Many students have found this assignment to be an emotional process, so keep a
record/journal of how this experience has impacted you.
b) This can be handwritten, but please include this journal in your final submission.
7. Use APA 7th edition style standards.
a) All research references must be from peer-reviewed scholarly journals dated in the last 5
years. Non-peer-reviewed Internet sources are not acceptable (i.e., Wikipedia, Psych
Central, and blogs are not peer reviewed sites.) Papers must include a title page, body, and
references pages. All references cited in the text must be listed on the references page and
all listed references must be cited in the body. You need at least 10-14 scholarly articles in
addition to our textbook as references.
b) All research papers are subject to review via Turnitin to analyze for academic honesty and
originality, and there is a heavy penalty for academic dishonesty. Do not attempt to get

around Turnitin by copying and pasting other authors’ words and then substituting certain
words with the thesaurus function, because this is very easy for instructors to detect.
8. Practice parsimony in your writing.
a) You may find that it is very easy to write a lot of material for this project.
b) A good rule of thumb is to write no more than two pages per stage.
9. Submit this assignment into Livetext AND Canvas.
Caution: While the assignment does allow you to be creative, be careful not to get so caught up
in literary creativity that you lose sight of the academic nature of the paper. See #8.
Suggestion
If you are struggling with the application of the material, it may help to ‘interview’ or talk with
someone who is in this stage or who has a child in the particular stage you are struggling with. If
you do this, please be clear with the person you talk to that this is for an assignment and that you
are not using their experience but trying to get a clear understanding of the stage of life. Feel free
to share with the person the materials from class to let them know what we are discussing. This
part is not to be formally written up for your paper but do include your thoughts in your journal.
Minimum Requirements:
This assignment must fulfill the following requirements:
1. Follow guidelines for APA Manual, 7th ed.
2. Include at least 10-14 professional references published in the last 5 years. Newspaper or
magazine citations do not count toward the 10-14 professional references unless there are no
other sources at all.
