Select two key quotes from the play. The quotations you chose must serve one
of the following purposes:
i. Illustrate a key character trait of one of the main characters
ii. Illustrate one of the main conflicts of the play
iii. Develop one of the themes of the play
For each selected quote, answer the questions below.
a) Where in the play does the quotation occur and which character says it?
b) How does this passage serve to develop character, plot, or theme?
c) Give an explication of the lines, focusing on literary devices and / or ways in
which the lines targeted the Elizabethan audience.
K/U: = 5 marks for each quote – knowledge of: characters, plot, conflict, theme, literal understanding of
text.
Ap: = 5 marks for each quote – application of knowledge of literary devices, ability to make connections to
contextual understanding (i.e. lines targeting the Elizabethan audience).
Part B: Literary Criticism Analysis (20 marks)
Read the document “Gertrude Talks Back” by Margaret Atwood and answer the
following questions in full sentences and paragraphs where appropriate.
a. How does this short story relate to Hamlet? (2 marks)
b. What is Atwood’s trying to convey about Hamlet through this story? (3
marks)
c. Do you agree or disagree with her message? Why or why not? (5 marks)
d. What critiques might a feminist critic have about the play Hamlet? Use
quotations from the play to support your assertions. (10 marks)
