Sociologists use the scientific method to make sure their investigations yield reliable and verifiable information that can be used to address real world issues and problems. As you learned in chapter 2 of Ferris & Stein (2020), one important step in the scientific method is selecting a design for data collection that would be appropriate for the research question the investigation is trying to answer. Below are some research questions that a sociologist might ask about the impact of the pandemic on parts of our social world.
Choose ONE of the issues listed and explain which research design you would choose to address the selected issue. Explain why you chose that design. Which design would you not select? Why?
Has the pandemic changed this society’s definition of “essential workers”?
How much of the current unemployment rate is a consequence of worker burnout?
How has quality of life issues been impacted by people’s ability to work from home?
Has the pandemic had a negative effect on school-aged children’s desire to interact with other children?
To what extent has social media shaped people’s definition of a “new normal”?
What has been the role of the pandemic in the success of large corporations and the demise of small businesses?
Which of the major theoretical frameworks or theories presented in the textbook readings would you suggest the sociologist use to explain findings from the study? [functionalism, conflict, feminist, Weberian, symbolic interaction, postmodern, midrange]
