Create a Health and Wellness Informational Brochure
General Directions
You have just been hired as part of a large grant to educate teenagers about their health and physical wellness. Your job is to create an information brochure, which addresses teen’s typical physical and health development, health risks, and healthy practices. You need to inform teens about typical age-related stressors, nutrition/diet issues, value of exercise, and other relevant health risks (see chapter 4 for ideas) for this age group . Offer strategies to promote good health and well being. Your brochure should include all four physical/well being topics mentioned previously, major physical or health changes during this age period in these areas, and strategies for healthy development. You need to develop a strategy for each topic or risk mentioned. Some strategies may address multiple physical changes; for example, you could indicate that exercise can alleviate stress and lower the risk of unhealthy weight. You must still explain how specific types of exercise impact all issues mentioned. Your focus will only be on physical development; you have not been hired to discuss cognitive or social/emotional development.
Goals of the assignment
demonstrate your understanding of key physical and mental health issues discussed in the chapter and supplemental materials
summarize key ideas that you believe the general public should know
communicate with a target audience using a visual format (employers may ask you to communicate with a target audience – clients, patients, co-workers, etc – using verbal, written, visual, or other formats
practice using APA documentation guidelines – many health, social and behavioral, public service, business, and engineering fields require the use of APA rather than MLA documentation style
Page requirement and formatting
I typically do not include page requirements for assignments, because I believe that this may restrict some students while encourage others to add fluff in explanations or use larger fonts. The brochure is no exception. Brochures, by definition, typically include a front and back page, so at minimum include two pages. If you complete an internet search, you will find brochures of varying length; however none as short as one page. Text boxes may help create more space. Creatively use your space to impart the most knowledge possible while creating a legible presentation.
Remember that like textbooks, those information packets that are clear, interesting, and manageable are more likely to be read. Do not write this paper like a typical research paper. Consider your target audience and present the information in way that will engage them. Be informative, yet creative!
Depth of explanation (level of detail)
I require explanation of ideas when writing these assignments. For example, I do not just want you to list ideas. The brochure audience should learn from what they read; do not just present common sense or widely known ideas. If you use lists within your explanations, you should also provide context. For example (topic and example may or may not be relevant for current Health Brochure or target audience), if you defined stress and identified some sources of stress, you may have indicated that school exposes young children to new stressors. You could then list some common ways that school creates stress. If any of those ideas need more clarity, then you need to explain those ideas. Parents understand homework, but they may not understand the new testing demands; you should offer a few brief statements that explain testing requirements in school. You could also list the effects of stress. If you mention gastrointestinal issues, then you should explain or provide specific examples. However, if you mention stomach aches, diarrhea, constipation in your list, no further explanation is needed. Consider the target audience’s average level of understanding of terms and ideas and explain necessary concepts. Also remember that I need to grade your level of understanding of concepts. You can easily pluck terms out of the text or other resources, yet not fully understand that concept. Demonstrate your level of understanding.

Assignment checklist
