Heart Of Darkness, Joseph Conrad

Answer the following question from Joseph
Conrad’s Heart of Darkness:

Discuss
the motivations and effects of imperialism as reflected in the novel. According
to Marlow’s remarks at the very beginning of the story, what initially inspires
Marlow to engage in the colonial experience? How does he initially view the
world outside of Europe? What is the significance of ivory in the story? What
is the effect of colonialism on the African population, and how are Africans
portrayed in the story?

Some Guidelines:

Papers should be 4-6 pp., typed, double spaced
Do not merely
summarize the text, and use quotations sparingly. Avoid block quotations at all
costs.
Write consistently in the third person, past tense. Avoid expressions such as “I think,” and “my
opinion,” as well as other “colloquialisms.”
Be sure and spell out contractions, and avoid the common
mistake of confusing “its” (indicating possession) and “it’s” (a contraction
for “it is”).
You should feel free to draw upon the lectures and/or the
textbook for the appropriate background, but avoid citing them directly, and
you should not consult outside sources, especially
the internet.
Finally, be sure and proofread your paper.
