The objections of Healthy People 2020/2030 are developed with the goal in mind of creating a healthier America. The objectives that are chosen each decade are high-priority health concerns/issues that need to be studied and improved. There are Leading Health Indicators that are used to assess and set a baseline of the health of the country for that decade. These are chosen using a system of framework that looks at determinants that affect the public’s overall health. There are multiple committees that give their input on what the objectives could be and why they are important.
The goal that I looked at in Helathy People 2020 had to do with objective C-16 which had to do with colorectal screenings for adults ages 50-75. In 2008, 52.1% of adults in this age range were getting their screenings, the target was for 70.5%. The most recent data from 2018 shows that this missed the mark, only 65.2% of adults in this age range were getting these screenings based on the most recent guidelines. While the percentage did go up, it did not reach the percentage that they were wanting.
The indicators are used to help access the health of the nation and give guidelines as to what topics need action. One of the indicators is Clinical Preventative Screenings. This includes, but is not limited to, children receiving the recommended doses of multiple vaccines by the age 19-35 months and adults receiving colorectal screening based on recent guidelines as to prevent an advanced condition. Preventative screenings and services are key in prevently disability, premature death, and overall increasing the health of the nation. These services are vital in detecting illnesses if present, and also preventing them all together. This is a very important indicator simply for the fact that it can prevent illness and death all together instead of treating it.
