In Chapter 1 of Six Myths About the Good Life, Kupperman argues that it is wrong to believe that pleasure will always lead to the best possible life. On page 9 of the reading, he says that, “They (personality settings) lead to pleasure seeking, suffering, and a loss of focus on what really matters. Their inadequacy is manifested in a scarcity of joy in most of our lives.” He characterizes joy as, “a kind of spiritual cleansing, or emptying out of concerns and prejudgements.” For this discussion, analyze the role of “joy”, as Kupperman defines it, and compare or contrast this with two of his arguments about the nature of pleasure. How are pleasure, happiness and joy related in our lives? Are they all states of being or phases through which we pass? In your answer, be sure to include internal citations in MLA formatting following actual quotes from the reading.
After you have completed the reading assignment for the module, submit your Initial Post to your discussion group before 11:59 pm on Wednesday. In your initial post, you will need to (a) respond to the Big-Picture Question and (b) ask Your Own Question:
Respond to the Big-Picture Question. To receive full credit, you will need to provide a complete response to the Big-Picture Question (see above) by referring directly and specifically to works discussed in the module. Typically your response will be two to four paragraphs. You will need to provide a main claim (i.e., an answer to the question) and draw on the content from the module’s readings to support your claim. Do not just summarize the work, and make sure you document the sources to which you refer with in-text citations

.
Ask Your Own Question that you have about the reading. To receive full credit, your question will need to be constructive, thoughtful, and pertain to readings in that module. Avoid questions that can be answered with a “yes” or “no.” A question that is too vague will not receive credit (e.g., “What is the point of the Antigone?” This question is too general to be helpful). Avoid questions that do not relate directly to the module or cannot be answered by referring to the readings in that module.
