How are things the same and how are they different from way back in the Founding Era (1774-1779 in America)? You might, for example, take particular sections of the Constitution, comparing the apparent intentions of the Framers of the Constitution with subsequent interpretations and practices. Or you might see how well Madison’s [or Tocqueville’s or somebody else’s] predictions have worked out.
No matter what topic you choose, your paper should be guided by a question. This question should appear where a title ordinarily goes – at the top of the first page. The point of the paper will be to answer the question in a manner that will persuade a friendly, but somewhat skeptical reader.
Also, no matter what topic you choose, your paper should go beyond material presented in class. “Research” does not mean “review.”
