HOW COUNTRIES WITH A SMALL POPULATION HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PRODUCE TALENT AND FIELD A COMPETITIVE MENS NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM

This study explores the developmental process of youth football players in smaller nations and how they have been able to field a competitive international men’s football team. The literature on the developmental process for the nations of Croatia and Belgium is accessible, but the information on the processes of Uruguay and Qatar is scarce. Belgium, with a population of 12 million, is the biggest of the four nations chosen for this research. Croatia has a population of 4 million, Uruguay has a population of 3.5 million, and Qatar is the smallest with a population of just under 3 million. Belgium, Croatia, and Uruguay have been fielding competitive football teams and shocking much larger countries. The purpose of this study was to analyze what developmental process these respective Football Associations have implemented and how their men’s national football team has been able to benefit.
