Chapter 17 begins with a discussion of the “Atlantic System,” a trade network connecting the Americas, West Africa and Western Europe with the wider global economy. One constant feature of the Atlantic System was slavery, the labor force behind the commodities that dominated this trade. Read the section called “The Atlantic System and the World Economy” on pages 448-454 and describe the relationship between slavery and consumerism in this era.
