Your paper will express what you experienced in reading and thinking about the poem. Your reaction should
reflect your own background, values, and attitudes in response to the poem, not what other people have
written about the poem. Your paper should be a product of your own thoughts and ideas.

1. Did the work bring up any memories from your own life experiences?
2. How did you react to certain themes or elements in the work?
3. Were there elements that bothered you? Pleased you? Confused you?
Notes:
1. First sentence of the introduction should include title and author’s full name. Following
references to the author should only include last name.
2. Include quotations from the poem. Use parenthetical references to line numbers.
Structure:
A response paper is not structured as formally as an essay, but it should still have a beginning, a
middle, and an end. You should type at least three paragraphs but no more than five.
You should also proofread your paper carefully for grammar and punctuation errors.
Format:
Use MLA format:
Header: insert your last name and page number in the top right margin. Make sure the header
is inserted in the margin, not in the main text area. The header should appear on every page.
Identification lines: include your name, instructor’s name, course, and date in the left corner
outside the margin—see sample on next page.
Title: insert your tile, centered.
Entire text: double space and use 12-point font (Times New Roman or Calibri).
Works Cited page: At the end of your paper, include a works cited page. For sample works
