For this assignment, we will pause to review a few examples of literature, theory and historical writings in education have been directed at race/multiculturalism. (You do not need to agree with all of the ideas in these readings; in fact, it would be helpful if you did not!) Each of the below articles and authors have many rebuttal and response articles directed at them and their works, feel free to research any of them further than the readings listed below).
1. Select two articles from the list below to read:
Black Youths in Predominantly White Suburbs: An Exploratory Study of Their Attitudes and Self-Concepts Download Black Youths in Predominantly White Suburbs: An Exploratory Study of Their Attitudes and Self-Concepts- James A Banks, who coined the term “multicultural education.” (Banks was an editor in our textbook who self describes as a black American male).
Still Separate, Still Unequal Download Still Separate, Still Unequal- Jonathan Kozol, (The link between race and poverty in the 1980’s, a self described Caucasian Jewish male, a former inner city teacher from America). Remember the time period in which Kozol wrote some of his polarizing works. His book ” Death at an early age” shook the nation in describing conditions that inferred Race was a variable on school facilities and teacher quality. His early work contains outdated language.
Pedagogy of the Oppressed Download Pedagogy of the Oppressed- Pierre Freire (a South American male author, felt reading and literacy skills were the key to social mobility. He lived in a nation where reading was rare, and was exiled). He uses the “banking” metaphor that directly relates to the text readings. You may benefit from looking up summaries or opinions of his work (other than Wikipedia).
Fractured States of America- Fredrick Yaffa (a middle eastern and American citizen without a described gender, Reflects how your political perspective might have a correlation to how you view issues of race and poverty)
2. Create an annotated bibliography using your two selected sources.
Be sure to create the reference in APA format.

3. At the end of the annotated bibliography, connect the two sources and create a conclusion.
How do the two sources connect? Do they have points of agreement or departures from one another?
The conclusion should be 1-2 pages of comparison , challenge or modernization of some of the ideas reviewed or rebuttal of the ideas expressed in these educational theorist’s work.

Include at least one example from your own experience as student, teacher, parent or community member that highlights/contrasts with one of these writings should be highlighted.
