How do you become a transformative teacher in today’s society?
Disrupt what you know – or think you know – about teaching and learning and think outside the box for ideas on how to transform teaching, education, and/or schools. Those with creative, innovative ideas that believe in themselves, “yearn for more” and will not be satisfied with the current state of education, will be the ones creating a movement in education and will truly find teaching a rewarding career. Think about what students/teachers/parents dislike most about schools and the current education system. What could you do to make a positive change in your classroom, school, district, and/or community that would reduce or alleviate that dislike or complaint? OR do you have an idea that can simply improve upon a current practice?
Presentation
Select a focus from the provided list for developing a bold, creative, innovative idea and select a topic that you are interested in, passionate about, OR where you see a need for change/improvement. Remember to disrupt what you know about education and think “outside the box” to think of a way to transform education.
Suggested general project focus ideas (develop a specific idea under one of these areas):
developing a different approach to learning or teaching
meeting a community need through the school system
creating a climate of possibility in class/school/district
creating an inclusive, culturally relevant learning environment
confronting social injustices and creating a democratic education
applying global perspectives in class/school/district
Suggestions:
Reinvent ideas by tweaking slightly
Combine ideas/resources in new ways
Consider your idea from different perspectives – students, teachers, principals, community members
Modify successful ideas from other disciplines – what works well in business, athletics, etc.
2. Research your topic and gather information/data/evidence that will support your idea. Your research should focus more on WHY this idea could be important or effective, not just WHAT it is. Summarize your research and document resources.
3. Imagine that you are submitting a video proposal for your idea to your local school board. CREATE a video presentation of 3-5 minutes to share your idea. The video can be a live recording OR a screencast of a presentation with audio narration.
Video must include:
A short introduction of who you are and why you selected this topic
A summary of your idea
Description of the goal or expected outcomes with support from evidence from research
Conclusion
Presentation Requirements:
Idea is new, creative, innovative – don’t suggest an idea that is already commonly done in schools
Research paper, with at least 3 reliable resources documented
Video is 3-5 minutes in length
Professional attire and location (if recording a live video); professional voice, organization, spelling/grammar
