You are a recent graduate with a major in sociology participating in a discussion panel on environmental problems. Around the table sit an eco-Marxist and a liberal. How does each explain environmental problems and how does each suggest solving them? Be sure to use key concepts and in your conclusion make clear which position is closer to your own, as a sociologist, and why?
Each essay requires that you
demonstrate your ability to identify, define and apply the basic
concepts we learned so far in this course that pertain to your issue. You are also evaluated based on the coherence of your arguments. (see sample evaluation sheet on Compass.) These requirements are easily fulfilled when you take the
following advice: 1) pick out the concepts you need in order to develop your
argument before you start writing the paper (all of the important
concepts and only the pertinent ones); 2) write an outline to make sure
you have an argument and that the points in your outline logically lead to your
conclusion. 3) when you use theoretical concepts, be sure to define them in
your own words; 4) provide concrete examples or manifestations of these
concepts (from readings, videos, or evidence you brought into class).
