This is a city planning class titled urbanization in developing countries
Just answer in bullet points, you only need to answer question 1 about what makes brasilia unique and its history.
question 2 has been answered by my friend.
What makes Brasilia unique? What is its history?
History; Plano Piloto; style
How has the auto dependency spurred by Brasilias modernist design shaped its economic geography? What groups has auto dependency served, and what groups has it harmed? How have elites reacted to it?
Where are jobs located?
Where do different socioeconomic groups live/work?
Who lives in the outlying areas? Examples?
This is what my friend wrote for question 2 in bullet points:
Please make your response similar to the format of my friend and what they discussed!
Auto dependency Econ Geography Inequality
Brasilia, a modernist city, was conceived as an escape from the problems of the traditional Brazilian city
Mass production of automobiles meant everyone could have a car
Population distributed evenly throughout the city regardless of class
No segregated, gated communities; just a diffusion of classes in equal dwelling units
Utopian ideal
Brasilia instead reproduced old problems.
The planners who designed Brasilia did not foresee such immense population growth in the Federal District when they devised Plano Piloto
Thus, the plan is very limited compared to the present extent of urban growth in Brasilia
[A]s an imagined utopia, [the Master Plan] remains silent about the details of the citys construction, settlement, and organization, for these would have negated its objective: freedom from existing conditions, from what was inadequate and unacceptable in Brazil (Holston 1989, 199)
Literally, right from the start. The low-skilled migrant workers who built Brasilia, imported from traditional cities, did not have the rights to live in Brasiliathe city they, themselves, were building. (Holston 1989, 200).
What a harrowing metaphor for the exclusions and paradoxes that characterize the city of Brasilia.
Just like utopian cities from elsewhere (i.e. Indias Steel Towns)
Favelas and Disneyland gated communities for the wealthy everywhere in the federal district
Extreme economic segregation, just like the rest of Brazil
Brasilia has uniquely high inequality compared to the rest of Brazil
This is due to a high percentage of public servants in Brasilia
The federal government pays public servants disproportionately well
The federal government increased pay for public servants in the 2000s, exacerbating inequality (Ferreira Lima 2013, 14).
As a result, the poor and rich live alongside one anotherbut separatelyin Brasilia.
Massive favelas in the Federal District
The Residential Axis in Brasilia is the plan dividing the city’s residential and commercial neighborhoods.
Designed for 500,000 people
Only 200,000 people live there (why?)
Now millions live in the Federal District
